Agia Marina Romeos Restaurant

Agia Marina Beach
Resort Area of Chania

One of Chania’s most well-known resort areas is the beach village of Agia Marina, which is only 9 km west of the city. It has dozens of hotels and every kind of tourist infrastructure imaginable. The community is named after the July 17 celebration at the neighborhood church, Agia Marina.

The shoreline of Agia Marina is spectacular, including gorgeous, uninterrupted sandy beaches. Numerous small artificial piers with swimming areas can be found on the west side, close to the port of Platania. A long, sandy beach that reaches Stalos is located in the eastern section of the shore.

All the amenities provided by a well-maintained beach can be found along the shore.

Thodorou Islet

Our gaze is diverted from the infinite blue of Agia Marina and Platanias by a tiny island in the midst of the sea, the island of St. Theodore, also known as “Thodorou” by the locals.

Thodorou was a sacred asylum during the Minoan era of history, and the Venetians decided to construct two strongholds on the island to deter pirates and Turks from invading Chania from the region of Platanias.

The bigger fort is known as “Tourlourou,” and the smaller one as “San Theodoro.” Thodorou was the site of historical conflicts with the Turks, although currently just two of the forts’ remnants survive.

Cretan goat, the famous Kri-Kri

The only animal that lives in Thodorou is the fabled Kri-Kri, a type of endangered Cretan goat that was relocated to protect it from the perils that lurk in residential areas. Thodorou has been designated a protected area as a result, and people are not allowed to enter the region.

There are currently thought to be 80 wild goats living on Thodorou property, and since 2009, visitors are welcome for a single, hour-long visit for touristic purposes..
